This week we are featuring Boie USA, a company created in 2016 with the goal to minimize disposable waste in the personal care industry.

When co-founders Manuel de la Cruz and Luma Grothe found out that disposing drugstore toothbrushes contributes to over 50 million pounds of landfill waste a year, they knew something had to change. With that, they started a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to create toothbrushes that were not your stereotypical bamboo bristle alternative.

With Manuel as the CEO today, the brand has expanded to not only offer toothbrushes, but body and face scrubbers to replace loofahs as well. But how exactly are these products different from others on the market? Well unlike many of them, Boie’s are designed with recycling and repurposing in mind.

When originally looking at recycling systems in place for standard toothbrushes and loofahs, the team at Boie noticed one of two things: the products were either impossible to recycle or if it were possible, they often were not processed correctly by typical recycling facilities.

With this in mind, Boie decided to not only make their toothbrushes and scrubbers 100% recyclable, but created their own recycling system. This way when customers are done with a product, they can send it to Boie directly and know it will be processed properly. They also use the recycled products to make new ones, which helps avoid excess sourcing and use of materials.

However these products are much more than just recyclable. They are also embedded with a medical-grade antimicrobial silver to help prevent bacteria growth and keep them clean. Additionally, Boie saves transport related carbon emissions by being both produced and sourced from materials within the USA. Not to mention, they are also shipped in 100% compostable mailers, so there’s no plastic or bubble wrap in sight when it arrives at your door.

Each product has distinct features as well. The toothbrushes for instance are made of a silicone-like material called TPE, which allows them to be extremely durable. In result, they last six months as opposed to the three of a traditional disposable toothbrush or electric toothbrush head. Plus these heads can be recycled and are free of BPA, which only adds to their appeal.

The body and face scrubbers are also made of the same material, but stand out for their exfoliating properties, using flexible bristles help clear away dead skin cells.

Overall, Boie proves to be changing up the personal care space for the better. Not only have they been innovative enough to create 100% recyclable products and their own recycling system, but their products are also affordable and easy to add into your everyday routine.

At the time of writing this, their recycling program has prevented 4057 items from being thrown in landfills. Although this may seem like a small amount, that’s 4057 less items from the 50 million pounds of landfill waste produced each year.
