Money Date With Ohza Mimosas

Every Friday I recommend having a money date…with a mimosa. Hence the name of my blog, Money & Mimosas. Your money date is your special time to review your finances, reflect on your goals, and celebrate your wins. Feel free to do it alone or with your money buddy. I usually like to treat myself during my money date and visit a restaurant that inspires me to elevate my lifestyle. Since we’re all experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve been doing my dates at home. Instead of featuring restaurants, I’m showcasing awesome small business owners who are making the world a more beautiful place.

In this article, you’ll meet Ohza, a premium mimosa company based in Massachusetts, USA.

I caught up with their founder, Ryan, to learn more about their delicious product and the inspiration behind the brand.

What specifically inspired the creation of Ohza Mimosas?

I wasn’t looking to get into the beverage space, however the idea for a pre-made mimosa just fell into my lap. It was sparked when a few friends of mine tried making some mimosas on a tippy boat off Cape Cod. Spilling ensued and after that trip I looked for a ready-to-drink option and discovered that there was no viable option. This sparked the idea to create one myself, in order to allow people to bring this hugely popular cocktail to other places and adventures beyond the brunch table. I’ve also always felt that the alcohol space lacked a product that truly created a balance between health-consciousness and flavor.  Historically you've had to choose between low-calorie, low-sugar, low-flavor options like hard seltzers or opt for malt beverages like a Hard Lemonade, which provide more flavor but also are loaded with calories and sugar. After researching the category, I thought a mimosa could bridge the gap perfectly between flavor and health.

How are Ohza Mimosas different from regular mimosas?

Ohza is just like a mimosa you’d make at home with premium sparkling wine and real orange juice, except it has fewer calories, less sugar, and is ready-to-drink. In fact, Ohza is up to 80% less sugar and 60% less calories than one made by you or your favorite bartender.  The result is a new definition of ready-to-drink cocktails, as Ohza has a calorie count close to a hard seltzer, but the bold flavor of a serious cocktail – all while containing no added sugar, nothing artificial, zero preservatives, and yet boasts an extremely clean nutrition label.

What does your company do to be more sustainable?

We’ve prioritized shifting all of our products to 100% recyclable materials. Our aluminum cans no longer use plastic shrink sleeves and are completely recyclable. All of our products are packed in cardboard boxes made from recycled material. Even our kegs are made from recycled products!

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs wanting to start their own business?

My best advice is that when you have an idea that you can't stop thinking about, you need to explore it. As you gain conviction in the idea and feel it could work in your gut, just go for it. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you start; I still don’t know a lot. But part of the journey is learning as you go. Plus, you have to look at the glass half full: if the business fails, you didn’t lose - you gained tremendous experience that will have a hugely positive effect on everything you do in the future both personally and professionally.
