Rootless: Sustainable Women’s Health and Wealth

Rootless is a whole health company focused on bringing sustainably sourced seaweed into daily life. Founded in 2022, it has achieved massive success, with 251% year-over-year growth between 2022 and 2023.

Its CEO and founder, Sachi Singh, is dedicated to transforming our global approach to nutrition and environmental stewardship. Rootless is committed to sourcing sustainably and empowering women to invest in their health with food as medicine.

The best part is that you can join in on the company’s growing success as an investor through its equity crowdfunding campaign.

But, is investing in Rootless worth the risk? Keep reading to decide for yourself.

What is Rootless?

The name, Rootless, is inspired by seaweed, which doesn’t have roots. Instead, seaweed and marine algae absorb nutrients through all their surfaces - one reason why it’s the world’s most nutrient-dense and diverse food! In fact, seaweed has 10 times the nutrients of land plants and supplies 130% of the daily recommended dose of iodine.

Rootless’ goal is to create products made from real, whole foods that improve health on many levels: individual mental and physical health; environmental health; and community health.

Singh's extensive background in climate change advocacy fuels her mission to cultivate a more sustainable and nourishing food system that nurtures individuals and safeguards the planet for future generations. She is intent on delivering the benefits of seaweed in a product that tastes great.

At the heart of Rootless's mission lies The Daily Bites—a nutrition bite that delivers the benefits of seaweed in delicious, once-a-day form. Bursting with over 40 essential nutrients, these bites are designed to support hormone balance, thyroid, and gut health, particularly in perimenopausal and menopausal women. The Daily Bite has dates, almonds, sunflower and sesame seeds, and seaweed. It comes in five non-ocean flavors: Cinnamon Crunch, Coconut Chai, Orange Pistachio, Double Strawberry, and Cacao Crunch.

Elyse Inamine, editor at Bon Appétit, enthusiastically wrote: “ I’m not a scientist, but I can tell you that the Orange Pistachio bites are supremely delicious. They’re barely sweet, with fragrant, floral vibes and pleasantly briny notes from the seaweed. And I appreciate that Rootless doesn’t try to mask the seaweed flavors but instead enhances them. Like a gummy vitamin, the only tough bit is sticking to one per day.”

Through sustainable sourcing practices and a commitment to environmental stewardship, Rootless prioritizes its consumers' well-being and strives to impact the planet positively. As Rootless continues to grow and innovate, it remains steadfast in its mission to redefine the relationship between people and the planet.

What are the benefits of Rootless?

Rootless offers many benefits, including individual health, environmental sustainability, and global food security. Approximately 173 million metric tons of carbon are absorbed by seaweed every year, about the annual emissions of the entire state of New York.

“Seaweed is a zero-input, regenerative crop,” says Singh. “Unlike land-based agriculture, it doesn’t require freshwater, fertilizers, pesticides, or even land to grow. If we replace 10% of the global diet with seaweed by 2050, we can quite literally transform the global food system by saving 110 million hectares of land, reducing global freshwater use, mitigating agricultural emissions, and increasing land-based biodiversity.”

She goes on to say, “Seaweed isn’t only healthy for the earth, it’s healthy for humans. The regular consumption of seaweed is linked with reduced rates of metabolic syndrome disease in communities in Korea and Japan, including in the blue zones, Okinawa. However, it is far from a mainstream food in the U.S.”

Research has shown that these cultures have less heart-, diabetes-, and obesity-related deaths compared to the US. Seaweed’s powerhouse of nutrients and bioactives has also been shown to have antioxidizing properties; recent studies are exploring seaweed’s role in reducing inflammation and fighting cancer.

However, despite its remarkable health benefits, seaweed remains an underutilized food source in the United States. By introducing seaweed-based products like The Daily Bites, Rootless aims to bridge this gap, empowering consumers to embrace the nutritional potency of seaweed and unlock its transformative potential for personal well-being.

Rootless’ business model and financial success

Rootless has adopted a digitally native approach, leveraging direct-to-consumer distribution and a subscription-based business model to drive growth and foster customer loyalty. The Daily Bite costs $44 for a 30-day supply, and subscriptions cost $39.60 per bag.

Singh has underscored the effectiveness of this strategy, highlighting that half of Rootless's revenues in the previous year stemmed from subscribers and repeat purchasers. This retention-focused model has proven instrumental in sustaining Rootless's success, with sales skyrocketing by 251% from 2022 to 2023.

Rootless has launched its equity crowdfunding campaign to raise $1.2 million. In its investor pitch deck, Rootless exhibits impressive financial performance, boasting gross revenues of $624,000 and gross margins of 51% as of February 2024. The company has forecasted a gross sales target of $1.24 million by the year's end and a projected customer lifetime value to customer acquisition cost ratio of three to one. Based on these numbers, Rootless is well-positioned to be a financially sustainable company.

What problems is Rootless solving?

Rootless is tackling two pressing issues with one innovative solution.

The first is to support women through life's hormonal transitions. Singh recognized the pervasive lack of resources and support surrounding menopause and aims to shatter the stigma. Rootless conducted a study of 36 women aged 27 to 70, who each ate one Daily Bite daily for four weeks. 100% of the participants experienced significant improvements in hormonal symptoms: 97% had less dryness and hormonal acne, 86% were less tired during the day, and 83% saw improvements in gut health, constipation, and bloating.

Secondly, Rootless is harnessing the power of seaweed to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability. With its myriad benefits, including carbon absorption and methane reduction, seaweed is a potent ally in the fight against global warming.

"There are millions of women silently enduring menopausal symptoms, searching for answers, support, and community," said Singh. "Our goal is to build trust and empower them with the necessary resources for whatever stage they’re at and bring these whispered and stigmatized conversations front and center."

Rootless’s growth plans

Rootless experienced an astounding 251% year-over-year growth between 2022 and 2023. Singh envisions a future where the health benefits of seaweed are as widely recognized as other health trends like gut health and turmeric.

“My goal in three to five years is to create so much fluency around the health benefits of seaweed that, when you see a seaweed product, you immediately think, ah, that’s great for my hormones and thyroid in the same way that consumers think about gut health and kombucha, turmeric, and immunity, etc.”

With projections indicating a $600 billion market opportunity by 2025 and an estimated one billion women experiencing menopause, Rootless is strategically positioning itself in the perimenopause and menopause space by providing education and trustworthy products tailored to women's hormonal transitions.

Is Rootless a good investment?

If you’re wondering, “Should I invest in Rootless?” at Money & Mimosas, we encourage you to ask yourself three questions:

  • What are the potential roadblocks?

  • What is the potential growth or upside?

  • How does this align with my values and/or overall investment strategy?

The primary roadblock we see is the need for more education about the need for hormone-specific products. There are a lot of wellness products on the market and Rootless may get lost in the sea of options promising to boost overall vitality.

However, hormonal health continues to be an increasingly discussed topic in the media. Celebrities such as Michelle Obama, Gabrielle Union, Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, and Jada Pinkett-Smith have publicly shared their menopausal experiences and the need for more women’s health education, research, and products.

Additionally, Rootless has delivered exceptional financial results quickly and is projected to scale its sales to $2.5 million in 2025.
