Seven Millionaire Lessons From Rihanna

At the end of 2009, Rihanna was on the brink of bankruptcy. Fastforward to the next decade, Rihanna is a total boss managing a multi-million dollar personal brand. I love watching her rise and believe all of us as freelancers can learn from her success. Here is my two cents on Rihanna’s personal brand and the millionaire lessons we can all learn from her.

Seven millionaire lessons from Rihanna

  1. Diversify your business and build a personal brand portfolio. Rihanna’s personal brand portfolio includes Fenty Beauty, Savage X Fenty (lingerie), her music, a luxury fashion house partnership with LVMH, a shoe line partnership with PUMA, and the Clara Lionel Foundation- a non-profit to fund global emergency response efforts. All of these organizations have a very different business model which creates a solid financial foundation for Rihanna.

  2. Develop a global presence. Hailing from Barbados, Rihanna created an international presence once she partnered with Jay-Z in the United States. But she didn’t stop there. Her brands are now well-known all throughout Africa, Europe, and Asia.

  3. Create businesses based on your interests. Rihanna has always been a fashion and beauty icon. She loves makeup and high-fashion. Additionally, she has always been a big supporter of diversity and representation. Her personal brand portfolio is a beautiful representation of her genuine essence.

  4. Become comfortable with being a spokesperson. Rihanna shows us that we have to be comfortable with being the face of our personal brand. No one can share your message more authentically than you. Whether it’s attending local events, speaking at conferences or using your photos in the marketing campaign, be sure you are front and center in your brand.

  5. Go inward to boost your self-worth. In various interviews, Rihanna has shared insights on the inner work she has done to elevate her confidence and self-esteem. Therapy, energy healing, connecting with uplifting girlfriends, and repeating affirmations are all important aspects of building a million-dollar personal brand.

  6. Collaborate with large brands. Rihanna has partnered with PUMA and LVMH to create massive success. We all have opportunities to work with brands that align with our mission and will help take our business to the next level. Brainstorm and create a list of companies that you can partner with to expand your reach and revenue potential.

  7. Marry digital marketing efforts with live experiences. One of the aspects I love about Rihanna’s approach to business is how she combines Youtube videos and social media posts with elaborate in-person experiences. As you grow your brand, diversify the way you market your services and products in order to create a 360 experience for your customers.
